This authoritative, multi-volume work showcases the cabinets of all 44 presidential administrations, from George Washington to Barack Obama. Unlike the first edition, which was arranged by Cabinet post, this second edition is arranged by administration. With its unique arrangement and thoughtful presentation of information, no other source provides such insight into this important political body.
Section One: Front Matter
This informative section begins with an author’s Preface that details the development of the U.S. Cabinet, quoting the Constitution itself. Following the Introduction is the first essay, The History of the Cabinet System, that takes the reader from the first mention of a “cabinet council” by philosopher Francis Bacon at the beginning of the seventeenth century to today’s British cabinet of 23 official members, whose meeting discussions are still kept secret. The next essay, Origins of the Cabinet Departments details the When, Why and How of the development of each Cabinet department.
Section Two: Cabinet Chapters
New Arrangement - arranged by Presidential Administration. Designed to help students and researchers focus on a particular point in history, each of the 55 Cabinet chapters—one for each administration—starts with a detailed Table of Contents.
Section Three: Primary Documents
Nine primary documents offer additional insight into the incidents surrounding a particular Cabinet member or administration.
Section Four: Appendixes
Expanded from the first eition, a total of 15 appendixes as well as a timeline.
Other features of this title include an expanded bibliography and a subject index.
With coverage of current events of the time of each cabinet, the formation of each group, their successes, failures and legacy, this resource provides a look at this political body that is available no where else. This resource is a must for public libraries, university libraries, and all political science collections.
