The Comparative Guide to American Hospitals provides a snapshot profile of each of the nations 4,834 hospitals - 141 more than last edition - in America measure up when caring for patients with a number of specific conditions. These informative profiles illustrate how the hospital rates when providing 47 different treatments (26 are new to this edition) within seven broad categories:
Section One: State Hospital Rankings & State Profiles
The first section of each regional volume is arranged alphabetically by state. Each state chapter starts with a ranking section, unique to Grey House, that ranks hospitals in that state on how often they meet each of the 67 accepted quality protocols. The quality measures ranked in this title are based on accepted, effective treatments supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medical Services of the US Department of Health & Human Services and the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA)—a public/private collaboration established to promote on hospital quality of care. HQA represents consumers, hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations and Federal agencies.
Following the ranking section, hospital profiles are listed first by city, then alpha within city. Profiles include name, address, phone, fax, web site, hospital type and ownership, number of beds, and whether the hospital provides emergency services. Further, each profile includes an average of five key medical contacts—representing not only the facility’s top administration but also the physicians specifically responsible for the care of heart, pneumonia, and asthma patients, as well as surgical care.
The remaider of each hospital profile examines the 67 quality measures in detail, comparing the hospital’s score with both the state and national average:
